Kelly Baum was awarded with the "Teacher of the Year" award from the Yoakum County Soil & Water Conservation District. Mrs. Baum is a graduate of Merkel High School. She received her bachelor's degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. She has taught at the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. She is also coaching UIL science and TMCSA science. Mrs. Baum has also taken several students to the Exxon Mobile Science and Engineering meet. She is a very hard working teacher with a hands-on teaching method.
Mrs. Baum is married to Jim Baum, and they have two children. Two of their four family members have graduated from Plains High School, and one is set up to graduate. Parker is currently a junior at PHS, and Bene' is a freshman at San Angelo State University. They also have a very special member of the family, a prairie dog. His name is Chip. This a symbol of her love for animals. She is also interested in working with volcanologists one day,as well as studying geology.
Mrs. Baum has taught at Comanche Elementary, Comanche Jr. High, Plains Elementary, and Plains Jr. High. When asked why she liked to teach science she responded, "I wanted to be a geologist, but with two small children, I could not travel, so I decided to teach science."Her favorite level to teach is 8th grade. She is thoroughly enjoying teaching in Plains and appreciates the opportunity to impact Plains JH students with her passion for science.
We would like to thank Mrs. Baum for her hard work and dedication to her teaching field. We applaud her continuing efforts to make science enjoyable.
