Plains ISD is happy to announce the newest member of its family: Cowboy Murphy. The name was voted upon by the high school student body and is honor of former Plains resident Murphy Luna. The Luna family settled here in 1905 and filed on four sections of land. In 1906, they established a post office and named it "Plains" because of the broad open plains of the landscape. The family also drilled a well and windmill on the now museum lawn, which furnished water for the citizens of Plains for many years. Plains ISD feels that this is a fitting tribute to a family that was integral in the history of Plains.
